What is "credit by examination"?

Sometimes students feel they already have extensive knowledge in a subject area. If so, the student can request to take an examination in lieu of taking the class. If the student passes the exam, the course will be noted on the transcript in the same way as if the class was taken. Some courses will not allow a credit by exam, and there are some restrictions on who can apply to take a credit by examination. Who do I talk to regarding completing a course by examination?

To begin the process for a credit by examination, you need to complete an application at the Admissions and Records office. However, you should also speak with an instructor of that class to see if this is something you should consider.

Do I have to have a certain academic standing in order to do a credit by exam?

Yes. In order to qualify for a credit by examination, you must have completed a minimum of 12 credits at Porterville College and maintained a 2.5 GPA overall.

Do universities accept courses that are taken credit by examination?

Some do and some don't; therefore, you should consult with the university you may be transferring to regarding their acceptance of a credit by examination.

Yes. There are a variety of subject areas and courses that will not accept a credit by examination. These are listed in the college catalog. You should review this list prior to submitting an application.

Will courses taken credit by examination show on my transcripts?

Yes. If the student passes the examination, the course, with credits and grade, will be entered on your permanent record in the same way as regularly scheduled courses.

If I fail a credit by examination, will that show on my transcripts or affect my GPA?

No; however, if you fail the exam you will not be allowed to repeat the exam for that course again.
