How do I know if taking an online class is the right thing for me or not?

Go to the college website at www.portervillecollege.edu and click on the "online courses" link to find out more about online classes. You can also speak with any instructor who teaches an online class, or any student who has taken an online class, to see if this is the right type of class for you.

Do classes taken online count the same as face-to-face classes for graduation/transfer?

Yes.

Are online classes easier than face-to-face classes?

No. This is sometimes a misconception about online classes. In an online class, you will expect the same requirements as in face-to-face classes. The objectives, outcomes, and assignments are the same, but just taught in a different format or environment.

Do I need to have a computer at home in order to take an online class?

Since your work and assignments will be completed online, if you don't have a computer you will need access to one on a regular basis.

Do I have to take a computer class as a prerequisite to an online class?

Though you don't have to be a computer expert to take an online class, a good understanding of computers and the Internet is very beneficial to online students.

What is a hybrid course?

A hybrid course is a class that combines both face-to-face and online instruction.

Will I still have to come on campus to do any assignments in an online class?

Some instructors may require you to take examinations at a proctored location. In most cases the proctoring is done on campus, but if necessary another suitable proctoring location may be arranged contingent on your instructor's approval. Review the course outline to see if your class includes proctored exams, by going to the college website at www.portervillecollege.edu and clicking on "Online Courses."

I don't have a computer or laptop, but can I use my iPhone to take an online class?

The use of an iPhone to complete an online class would be very difficult, if not impossible, due to the amount or research needed, document size, sending and receiving of large attachments, etc.
