FAQs

Questions that Porterville College students often ask...   and the answers.

General Education (GE) requirements

What is general education?

As part of the associate degree requirements, students must complete a particular general education pattern in addition to the requirements in their major. Which general education pattern a student selects will depend on if or where a student may transfer after graduating from Porterville College. General education is a broad selection of course offerings that include English, communications, mathematics, science, arts and humanities, and social and behavioral science.

What GE courses are required in order to complete my degree?

This will depend on your educational goals after graduating from Porterville College. If a student is not planning to transfer, then he/she should following the Porterville College General Education pattern. If a student is planning on transferring to a CSU, then he/she can follow either the CSU GE Breadth or IGETC patterns. If a student is planning on transferring to a UC, then he/she must follow IGETC.

Are GE requirements different between CSU, UC and private colleges?

Yes. If a student is planning on transferring to a CSU, then he/she can follow either the CSU GE Breadth or IGETC patterns. If a student is planning on transferring to a UC, then he/she must follow IGETC. Since there is no particular general education pattern that is standard for private colleges, students are encouraged to discuss with a counselor or a representative of the private college for guidance on which pattern to follow.

Do I have to maintain a certain grade point average in my GE courses?

Yes. You must maintain a "C" average in your general education courses.

Is there a particular order in which to take my GE courses?

No, unless some of your GE courses are prerequisites to another GE course.

Where can I get a copy of the different GE checklists?

GE checklists are available in the counseling center in AC-126 or on the college website at www.portervillecollege.edu.

Do I have to complete all the GE requirements before I transfer?

Completion of GE is not a requirement for transfer; however, you are strongly encouraged to complete your GE courses prior to transfer. If you do, then the UC or CSU will accept them as a package. If you do not, you will be subject to the GE pattern of the institution you transfer to that may include additional GE courses once you get there. Please check with a counselor if you are considering transferring without completing your GE courses.
